Adams, Peter

Working in oils for twenty years, Peter Adams has painted portraits as well as urban landscapes. He has developed his own distinctive and expressive style and is now mostly inspired by the dramatic rural landscape that surrounds him. He is drawn to the interplay between order and chaos, grace and tradgedy, mystery and clarity. Often exploring the symbiotic and regenerative powers of the natural world, he is especially interested in the realm in which human and natural worlds meet - both in harmony and in opposition.
Peter Adams lives on a farm south of Creemore, Ontario and exhibits at several galleries across Ontario. He welcomes visitors to his studio at 154 Mill Street (the back of the Mad and Noisy Gallery).

Anderson, John

Canadian Contemporary Impressionist.

Canadian, because I am & contemporary because I'm alive and impressionist because you have a pretty good idea about what you might be looking at in my work & I paint because that's what I do. I paint. Within me are ways of seeing that are mine. The process of painting is a way for me to express what it is that I see. Charles Hawthorne, noted New England painter of the 1920s, wrote that we have a duty to find the beauty in the ordinary. I look for elements of beauty and interest within anything that light touches.

My work evolved from the oil painter's perspective of brush on canvas. I use tonality applied with rich colour and an impressionist character. The subject does not drive the composition but the force of light, however muted or powerful, creates a path that becomes the essence of the composition for me. Movement throughout my work is directed by the interplay of warm and cool colour. Fluctuating emphasis of light and shadow along with the use of lost and found edges enhances that movement.

Anderson, Marion Redrupp

I generally use landscape or floral fragments to explore design and shape, executed in a vibrant palette. I am challenged to blend quilt patterning, stained glass, and computer imagery into a very personal contemporary statement.

My watercolours are occasionally mixed with Caran d'ache watercolour crayons on watercolour paper of various sizes. Most recently I have explored the impact and strength of fragmented landscape memories, punctuated by colour or black and white photocopied photographic reproductions. The use of mixed media such as latex paint and metal with watercolour further enhances my work.

Bail, Frith

Since I was a young child my hands have always been in clay. Creating female forms have always been part of my repertoire. After going through treatment for breast cancer, my clay figures were an important means to help me get back to life. They held my sorrow and my madness. They led me in my search to find my inner balance. Each piece is a labor of love. I have a special spoon that I rub the unfired clay with until it glows. This burnishing process is slow and meditative. After this, the pieces are bisque fired. The final stage is a sawdust-firing. Each piece is individually wrapped with reeds and copper wire. The little packages are layered into a steel container filled with sawdust. The top is lit on fire, and a slow and smoky firing ensues. The results are always wonderfully surprising, as the smoldering sawdust leaves its unique fiery touch on each piece.

Ballanger, Sheila

Oil, acrylic, watercolours
In the beginning, Sheila painted casually as she worked and raised a family. Her priorities and fascination with art changed as the years passed. In moving to Wasaga in 1996 she found a whole new world.
"There is no better place to live as an artist than here along the shores of Georgian Bay. To express what I see and feel as I work with oil on canvas gives me great pleasure and joy. Being able to share these feelings in my paintings is a bonus. My goal ? To follow the yellow brick road and enjoy every step of the way."

Bannerman,Sheila

Beauchesne Bédard, Hélène

Art has always had a special place in my life. At school, I used to draw everywhere. I always volunteered to create theatre sets and decorations. I lean toward warm colors, earth tones. Sometimes disciplined, other times more emotional, I always seek light and movement. My paintings are often in a panoramic format.

I spread on canvas the emotions stirred in me by the vitality of the sky, by the blaze of colours from a dawn scene, by the dreamlike sensations felt through the evening sky after a sunny day. I allow room for the viewer's imagination so that everyone may find his own quest.

I often paint dusk scenes, when all of the days events coalesce, the moment when the colours merge to give us one last glimpse, the moment where everything is set ablaze in an inspiring kaleidoscope of colours .

Belcher, Susan

Oil, pastel, acrylic
I studied at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto during the late 1980s and early 1990s, while supporting my two children and myself as a Registered Nurse. This gave me a unique opportunity not only to study the human figure in depth, but also to look below the skin at the human condition with empathy. I strive to bring clarity and honesty to my work.
Presently I am a professional artist, painting and teaching from my studio in Wasaga Beach and The Blue Mountain Foundation for the Arts in Collingwood.
I work mainly in oil paint, pastel, and acrylic. I love to use strong colours and am always pushing myself to a new level of expression. My fascination with people is seen in many of my paintings, as well as my love and awe of nature and rural settings. I feel art should include the viewer in a dialogue, sharing a moment, an emotion, or concern.

Canning, John

I believe that the life of an artist is an evolution along a path and that one's abilities continue to grow and strengthen with age. Having the ability to see life through the creative eyes of a painter fuels one to capture that beauty, emotion, colour and texture and share it with those around us who are willing to appreciate it. As we continue to grow and mature as artists we must be very open to new relationships, new ideas, new (and old) techniques and never stop dreaming. But what is most important is that we must stay true to our original convictions and never forget why it is that we must paint.

Collier, Steve

Stained glass
Steve's attitude is that his work "fits and enriches". It must fit with the theme, décor, and character of the space and its owner. The stained glass should enrich the feeling and experience of the space. His motto is "We make beautiful homes more beautiful". Steve works out of the Avalon Clearview Studio, which is also a bed & breakfast run by his wife Elaine. Avalon feeds Steve's passion for stained glass in a couple of ways: the building is a showcase for Steve's work, demonstrating how his stained glass "fits", and for displaying Steve's own personal taste in the art.
Avalon, situated at Devil's Glen, overlooks the Niagara Escarpment and the Mad River valley and its fields, forests, pond and streams. Like many other artists in the area, Steve's artistic imagination is spurred by the nature that surrounds him.

Dakin, Richard

Many photographic presentations highlight the technical prowess of the photographer. This portfolio does not. The feature here is the raw beauty of the Georgian Triangle. From rocky beaches of Georgian Bay, to the ruins of Castle Glen the possibilities for the photographer are endless. In this collection, I have tried to let the subjects speak for themselves.
The photographs here were taken with inexpensive equipment, using basic photographic techniques. Photoshop manipulations, in most cases, were minimal. In a sense I have tried to master the technology in order to minimize its influence on the final image.
All of the photographs in this show were taken within a thirty minute radius of my home in Collingwood. I consider myself lucky to be living here. Every day brings variations in light and shadow that transform the landscape. I hope you enjoy seeing the Georgian Triangle in black and white.

Davies, Louis M.

As a youth in London, England, I enjoyed art. I developed my skills through private lessons with a local artist. My talent caught the eye of my high school art teacher, who led me into producing award-winning pictures. All in all, not a bad position for a youth who many thought would go to art college.
Over the years, I attended numerous art courses with great teachers and produced works in the awe-inspiring area known locally as "cottage country". I found what I liked and developed my own style, which, along with some passion and a little confidence, enabled me to turn my hobby into a career in 1997. As a full-time artist, I initially created wildlife and scenic works in watercolour, acrylics and oil.
I also paint custom pictures that please those who commission them. I love what I do, and my solid realistic style has resulted in works going to buyers in North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

de Camillis, Laurie

The Southern Ontario landscape is my home. I have driven its artery (Hwy 401) so often that I have watched groves of trees grow up and the familiar hills turn from brown to yellow to green -- then red and back again. With almost every passing I would see a stand of trees, a meadow or just a special light that would make my heart flutter. This configuration of beauty is a reminder of the symbiotic relationship we have to all other living things. It is these moments I try to capture with strokes of colour that dance for me across the canvas to a classical tune like Mozart or Vivaldi. It is an objective view with no drama of light or illusions of perspective - just the delight of colours and forms relating with each other.

Dennis, Paulette

I have been seduced by art from my first memory, from the joy of singing, the passion of dance, the grace of skating to the discovery that art could also be applied to my other passion: science. It took many years before I would fulfill the dream of becoming a scientific and medical artist.
In the interim, my art became manifest in drawings and paintings, mostly of nature, trees, rocks, fabric, the human figure. Things with lines that traced elegance and solitude or lines of growth and strength. Many of my drawings are studies of stress lines in rocks, growth lines of vines, life lines in leaves, flowing lines of animal hair. All spring from the lines of a life that has gone in many directions. My aim is to keep the lines of my art fresh, seeking, gentle and beautiful as I interpret the world around me.

Dennis, Peter

I endeavour to make objects that recreate, for the viewer and for myself, the childhood experience of discovery, surprise and delight in the world around us. For these objects to be successful the viewer cannot be a passive observer but must participate in the work mentally and sometimes physically. Many of the works are automata, which require the viewer to physically interact with the object, usually by turning a crank, in order to discover the meaning of the work. Through this personal involvement, the viewer becomes an integral part of the work.
The objects are always three-dimensional so that they exist in the same reality as the viewer, rather than in the illusionary world of two-dimensional work. I use any material and method that is expedient to achieving the idea, although I have a preference for materials that are subordinate to the idea and do not have any special intrinsic value, strong characteristic or beauty of their own. The objects I make are sometimes described as whimsical, humorous, toy-like, magical. When this happens I feel that the work has succeeded.

Eakins, Liz

Elizabeth was born and raised in Kitchener-Waterloo where she gained an appreciation of simple and elegant imagery born of that rural landscape. She attended the Ontario College of Art in Toronto where she dabbled in many disciplines but majored in printmaking. Her specialty quickly became block printing, both woodcuts and linos which offer the immediacy and material responsiveness reflected in her drawings and patterns. Much of her work is derived from natural forms and patterns but is then run through her personal filter to arrive at a unique style.
In 2002, Elizabeth moved with her family to the Creemore area where she homesteads just outside of town. She is highly involved in the Mad and Noisy Gallery and sits on the Board of Directors.

Acrylic, oil, mixed media, sculptures, jewellery
I paint horses, both because I love the way they look and because they can express emotion and mood far more effectively than humans. Where we are often hindered by our attempts to communicate with words, horses express themselves physically. In addition to a full range of facial expressions, they also use their moveable ears, bodies and four legs to show a mood or concept.
My paintings fall into two main categories: "horse paintings" that capture horses' pure joy of movement or the way light falls across skin in dappled sunlight or a hip in the light of early dawn; and "human paintings" expressing social issues or coping with everyday life issues.
The latter category becomes a collaboration with the viewer. I paint my experiences, and the viewer adds the depth of their own personal interpretations.

Gibson, Yvonne

As a hobby, I love to create whimsical Santas and old-fashioned renditions of Father Christmas, and I decided, after retiring from a banking career, to pursue my love of art. I am self-taught, but have found some direction through lessons with Willy Wildman. I enjoy dabbling in water colour and oil and get excited when I see the finished product coming to life.

Most of my work is of the Georgian Bay Area where I have lived all my life. I am President of Georgian Bay Arts and Crafts Assoc. and a member of Blue Mountain Foundation for the Arts.

Gorrie, George

I am retired, living in Collingwood, Ontario. I took up watercolour painting early in my retirement on the suggestion of my wife. During my working years, I was a VP of Gorrie Marketing in Toronto. Our company was in the sales promotion business and employed artists to render our creative and finished art, which is now done on computer. I believe that the years of working with many artists to render our presentations was instrumental in assisting me with my own art.

Greisman, Elizabeth

I began my career as a Painter in 2000 and have found my niche drawing and painting dancers, portraits of women and creating an impression of Canadas mountain ranges. I work primarily in oil paint on canvas, or mixed media on paper. Recently, I have been experimenting with drawing and painting on silk panels. I have lived in Toronto for most of my life. My family homes have been in the centre of the city for five generations. The narrative of my family story influences my approach to my artwork. Through my interest in womens roles and aging, the preservation of architecture and green spaces, education of the young child and the intertwining of all artistic disciplines, I assimilate the influences and teachings of the previous generations.

Grisé, Deb

Self-taught artist, Deb Grisé, developed her painting style using watercolour with various leading edge support products, such as synthetic paper and canvas. More recently Deb has studied oil painting techniques, and has found that she loves working in this medium. Portraiture is of particular interest to Deb, either working with a live model in her studio, as in the oil painting, Portrait of Simon (right), or from photos. Landscape is another favourite subject, Deb being especially fond of the Georgian Bay region. Deb has her studio in her home, where she lives with her family in beautiful Penetanguishene, Ontario. Her work can be viewed in the local galleries as well as her on-line studio.

Harkness, Jim

Spanning over 27 years, Jim's shop produced about 200,000 woodcarvings in basswood and pine, in about 800 variations. Jim was the first carver to mass produce loons for the North American gift market, and he created the 320 loon profiles that marked the entrances to Northern Reflections mall stores across North America. The work produced by his shop mainly included songbirds, ducks, geese, cats, beavers, roosters, puffins, nativity sets and owls. It also included dozens of limited production items (never numbered), from dodos, skunks, racoons, humans and angels, to woodcocks, pheasants, grouse, dogs, pigs, boobies, turkeys, hawks and eagles, to mention a few. They were all rough cut on a bandsaw, then carved with files and painted with oil stains and enamels. They were also varnished. In 1977, at the request of the McMichael Collection gift shop for which he carved for the duration of his career, he began dating his work. Work done before that is undated.

Hickling, Roy

My figurative oil paintings are rendered alla prima, worked quickly and gesturally in thick, textured layers of paint mixed on the canvas and often carved back in to previous layers. They combine a sense of spontaneity with a strong read on the subject and an underlying emotional subtext. I view my process as an exploration of my intuitive ability to read people and to recognize to what degree the work is connected to the model, myself, a combination of both, or to something else altogether.

Hodgetts, Dave

Dave is a retired teacher/principal living in Rob Roy, near Collingwood. He has a deep love of the out of doors and throughout his life has pursued many outdoor activities. His boyhood summers were spent at Camp Hurontario in Georgian Bay, a boys' camp founded by his father. At Hurontario, Dave began painting at a very young age under the guidance of the camp art teachers. Here, Dave watched and learned from some of Canada's greatest artists who visited the camp to paint the bay. A.Y. Jackson, John Rennie, Hilton Hassel, David Blackwood, John Hartman and Ted Bartram are among those who have influenced Dave's work.
"I like experiencing wild places where I can canoe, paint and flyfish. Algonquin Park, Georgian Bay, the Niagara Escarpment and Canada's far north feed these passions."

Hope, Mark

Oils, plaster of paris, sculpture
I've always had a creative spirit in some form or another since childhood. I wish to devote my life to living through my senses. Painting allows me to do that. Today, being an artist is not so much what I do but who I am and I love being an artist. I find that painting and other mediums can be tools for learning about myself and learning to see. The act of active observation is a very intimate thing. Discovering my subject through observation, connects me forever to it. Observation is a vehicle for my imagination.
I am primarily a painter, working in oils. My subject matter varies and is mostly a representational exploration of light and colour. I work with soapstone as a sculpting medium and have found Henry Moore to be a strong influence in my work. I also enjoy black and white photography. My strongest influences are from the impressionists, the Group of Seven, Salvadore Dali and Henry Moore.

Hotson, Barbara

Watercolour
For me, painting is another way of communicating the thoughts and feelings that I have expressed in my photographs for years: the importance of home and family in light of the transience of time.

More importantly, it is a way of truly connecting with a place: of becoming part of a landscape or a corner of a garden--of merging with the light and the shadows and of breathing close to the earth; of slowing down the moment to a full stop and being in it.

Lawrence, Larry "Toots"

Toots finds this area very welcoming and supportive for artists. He has been exploring artistic expression in oil paint as well as abstract stone sculptures and incorporating hand-created stone pendants into Natural Neckware by Toots. Participation in local art shows such as those sponsored by the Georgian Bay Arts and Crafts Association promotes discussions with other artists and provides an impetus to strive for excellence. Toots is presently Vice President of GBACA. Both passions have given back an immense amount of pleasure and satisfaction; the music more ephemeral and art more concrete but both passions have the component of sharing with a wider audience.

Ledden, Taylor

Taylor Ledden is a fifth-generation Canadian born in Quebec and raised in Ontario. Ledden is a retired technical writer. A few years before retirement Ledden became re-acquainted with woodturning. Ledden's work is distinguished by close attention to finish as well as form. Visitors often comment on the fine finish. Ledden's turnings include burl bowls, both with and without natural edges. His home and studio are located in Simcoe County close to the shores of Georgian Bay.
"I am constantly amazed at the amount of beauty that lurks inside a really ugly piece of wood. I often make this comment to people who are admiring one of my burl bowls. The "ugly piece of wood" is a burl. Burls are abnormal growths found on the sides of tree trunks. This abnormal growth is analogous to a tumour in humans, and may be the tree's response to infection or insect activity. The resulting burl is not attractive, but the abnormal growth that created it also creates wondrous patterns in the wood. My inspiration is the burl itself, and my time is spent revealing the beauty that lies within."

Lee, Norma

"Nature to the thoughtful, will always remain a vast and delightful storehouse, the fountain of inspiration." John F. Carlson

I started painting in oils when I moved to the Georgian Bay area of Ontario in the mid-1990s. I prefer to paint on site, whether on the rocky shorelines of nearby lakes, on rolling hills and in woodlands, or just out the back door in my perennial flower garden.
My goal in each painting is to capture the light. It may be the subdued atmospheric light of an overcast autumn day or the bright warm light of a sunny summer afternoon. Since light continually changes, it is essential to paint quickly to capture that fleeting moment. By immersing myself in the subject matter I hope to transfer onto the canvas my emotional response to a scene. If a viewer responds to these feelings, I feel that the painting was a success.

I have been visiting auction houses, yard sales, surplus dealers and combing the streets for urban flotsam for about fifteen years, slowly building up a large palette of industrial fittings and generally odd high tech junk. I look for circular shapes, rusty hardware, and highly crafted components and often the pieces I come across dictate the direction of the sculpture. I get to be an artist, antique dealer, and pack rat all in the same occupation.

McConnell, Aggie

An education in Western Canada, majoring in art-history, has been followed by many years of study in all aspects of visual arts. Mentors, such as John Leonard, Dennis Cliff, Ottis Tamisaskis and Marsha Stonehouse have facilitated work in many disciplines and mediums, including oils, acrylic, watercolours, encaustic, sculpture, lithography and life-study.

Aggie also worked for 20 years as a consultant and selector in corporate art placement through Art Rental of A. G. O., as well as principle of A.L.M. and Associates, Framing & Consulting

Aggies work is included in a number of corporate and private collections, Canada and the U.S.,and is shown in a number of galleries, which regularly include the Upper Gallery, 3016 Bloor St. W., Toronto, Latitude 44 Gallery, 2900 Dundas St. W., Toronto, and the Art Centre Gallery, Blue Mountain Foundation, Collingwood, On.

Aggie's art style is characterized by an expressionist treatment, often with impasto textures and combinations of mixed mediums. She is presently working toward a more minimal conceptualism, however, surface texture and strong contrasts in light and colour intensity remain her favoured method of expression.

For Aggie, art continues to be a passion, a joy, a challenge and always, as adventure.

Miller, Sue

I try to live in the moment. So too, with my paintings, I try to capture my immediate response to a scene or subject at that moment. These can be dramatic or very simple & frank images. I am most inspired by landscape & historical or simple architecture. What usually draws me in is: "How does this scene connect me to the past or the present, & how do they connect me to myself & others?"
In today's fast-paced, sprawling, high tech world, there are many subtle scenes that get overlooked or become completely obliterated & forgotten. My purpose is to capture & illuminate the precious value of these things & how to appreciate simplicity. Presently my work is transitioning towards a more expressionistic, simplified approach to subjects that inspire me.

Vincent is an artist who works primarily in watercolours and oils. The inspiration for his paintings comes from his travels in both Canada and abroad. Some are visionary works that have been developed from memory, others of the actual location or subject matter. He often adds images of humans or animals to create interest or tell a story.

Moget, Deborah

As a child, I was fascinated with the stained glass in churches and old homes. The texture and colours never ceased to amaze me. To this day it still hasn't. The majority of my pieces are in relation to nature: animal, bird or scenic. I found working with glass brings me such joy and satisfaction. I hope others enjoy them as much as I enjoyed creating them.

Moore, Erika

The complicated simplicity of nature intrigues me. I find it fascinating that our landscape is made up of so many different elements and that they come together to form a harmonious, breath-taking environment. In my artwork I try to create the same organic mesh of disorder. In my own way I recreate the natural energy of a place or vignette that I am intrigued with. I lean towards abstraction in my artwork to give the sense of tranquility and captivation I feel when truly inspired.

Mueller, Andrea

The majority of my work involves the design and creation of contemporary custom jewellery. I work closely with my clients by sketching out design ideas and together deciding on a unique piece of jewellery. Once we have agreed on the perfect design, I use a process called lost wax casting to make the final piece. This involves carving a wax model to create a mold and then having it cast into silver, gold or platinum. Lost wax casting allows me to incorporate a wide variety of design elements, including unique geometries, patterns, textures, gemstones and pearls. Much of my inspiration comes from simplifying shapes that I find in the outdoors. While I am attracted to natures complexities, I like to represent them in abstract ways. I believe this contributes to the contemporary aesthetic that I strive for in my work.

Pearce, Daphne

My passion is colour wherever I see it, whether in Arizona, Florida or Ontario. For more than 50 years, I've shared my love of the changing seasons, animals, birds trees, and seas through my paintings and photography. Every day brings something new. Most of my paintings now are from photographs.
If you have a treasured scene or pet's photo, I'd be happy to transform it into a painting.

Peycha, Andrew

Andrew Peycha is a painter who draws inspiration from scenic landscape and the beauty in nature. His travels have taken him across North America, painting scenes of time that capture his eye.
Prior to moving back to Collingwood in 1999 to focus on painting full-time, Andrew pursued a successful illustration career in Toronto as a digital painter for Nelvana, the producer of popular children's cartoons. His illustrative works have been featured in a variety of publications including Canadian Lawyer, Family Practice, and Pharmacy Post. He has also been commissioned by various clients such as The Toronto Star, Harcourt Brace and Company, and Young and Rubicam Canada. Andrew has also donated several works of art for auction and was the top selling artist in 1990 and 2000 at Zoodo, the gala fundraiser held by the Metro Toronto Zoo.

Pirk, Norm

I started taking jewellery-making interest courses at George Brown College in Toronto during the 70s. Over the years I have completed over a dozen courses in a number of venues, including workshops offered through the auspices of the Society of North American Goldsmiths.
When my full-time career as educator permitted, I took commissions and produced unique pieces in silver and gold. Now that I am retired, I have time to pursue my love of making beautiful pendants, rings, earrings, and pins. I design and execute jewelry that tends to be clean, almost Bauhaus in nature, although of late I have noticed a little whimsy creeping into my work. My wife Margaret is my design consultant and sometime bead lady. I get personal satisfaction from making the more complex pieces, featuring unusual stones and/or texture and as a result, all my jewelry is one-of-a-kind.

The magical beauty of the world as seen in flowers and landscape has always been a profound inspiration for my art. Charged forces of life burst onto the canvas and are momentarily contained. West, Darlene

Upon retirement four years ago I moved to the village of Maxwell, where I live in a 50-acre hardwood bush -- behind our house is a small pioneer log house that had previously been used as a barn. With a little TLC it has become the perfect studio.
Since moving to Maxwell I have immersed myself in developing my talent. I want to share with others the wonders of nature and the beautiful vistas of the Niagara Escarpment and Georgian Bay that surround us.
I love nature and I try to look beyond the obvious and create unique paintings that depict our beautiful area. I work in oils using vibrant colours and lines of movement to draw the viewer into the painting.

Zaryski, Tanya

I consider myself to be an image maker. Many of my pictorial narratives re-invent scenes I remember from my childhood. Growing up on a farm in rural Ontario, I have become again interested in that familiar landscape as a constant backdrop for the events (past and present) which are acted out. In my painted images, certain rooms (familiar fragments of furniture, of architecture) or fields and houses reappear. The panoramic view is always the same, altered slightly through tricks of memory.
Some images read as allegories -- I have created myths out of my own history. Some scenes show familiar people beside exotic ones. There is a collapsing of the ordinary and the sublime into a single moment. Every event is laden with symbolism and significance.
I began my art training at the University of Toronto, studying art history, painting, drawing and sculpture, before discovering glass blowing at Sheridan Collage. I completed three years working as an artist-in-residence at the Harbourfront Glass Studio in Toronto.
